The Path of Extreme Self-Care

Our theme for 2015 is I Am Alive to Thrive! Intentions, inspired goals, bold actions…they are all part of stepping out and living a life worthy of your true self. There’s no doubt that you’re up to a lot right now. Maybe it’s caring for your family, branching out in business, entering a new phase of life or experiencing the unfolding of your spirit.

We are a dynamic group of people that is making a difference in this world. And that is exactly why we need to take care of ourselves in deep and meaningful ways. So, for the rest of this month we are shining a light on self-care.

In Cheryl Richardson’s book, The Art of Extreme Self Care, she shared a particularly difficult time with her counselor who noticed that instead of shifting schedules, asking for help and making room to breathe during this hardship, Cheryl…fell into a pattern of self-neglect. That phrase that made me stand up and grab a highlighter.

Whew, those two words, self-neglect, pull a big punch! Do you make a habit of putting yourself on the back burner while you take care of everyone or everything else? Things like forgetting to eat, poor nutrition, not getting enough rest, skipping exercise or burning the candle at both ends are signs that you need your own attention.

It’s important to remember that a solid foundation of care and attention is necessary in order to flourish. As Buddha wisely reminds us, “You yourself, as much as anybody in the entire Universe deserve your love and affection.”
