Exploring Our 6 Human Needs – Part 2 of 3

Last Sunday we began exploring the six human needs from the work of Anthony Robbins and psychotherapist Cloe Madanes. These needs are basic to all of us; they are key drivers in who we are and how we live our lives. And we are always trying to meet these needs, either consciously or unconsciously.

In that case, it only makes sense to learn what each need entails and understand which are your primary motivators. No right or wrong needs here, you can cast off the lens of judgment, come at it with an attitude of curiosity and open yourself to profound insights. Here are the needs we looked at last week:

Certainty: The belief is that you need to feel secure, safe and comfortable. Your focus is on stability: habitual routines, planning, preparing for and saving for the future. An important stretch is to fully experience the present moment without focusing on what will happen next and/or what the future might hold. When fears and doubts arise, others can support you by countering them in realistic ways.Variety: The belief is that happiness comes from having many different experiences and challenges. You hate boredom and often have several projects on the go. It can be hard to stick with activities that aren’t that exciting, even if it leads to difficulty in the future. Your stretch is creating stability and permanent relationships while still enjoying times of excitement and adventure.

Significance: The belief is that happiness comes from feeling respected, worthy, unique and important. There are many goals to achieve, skills to develop and you work hard to make it happen. Sometimes at the risk of your own well-being! Your stretch includes letting yourself be loved for who you are rather than your accomplishments or the respect & admiration of others.

There is so much more to these three needs than can be written in this email. If you would like to listen to last week’s talk click here.

This week we delve into the the next three needs: Love and Connection, Growth, and Contribution. It is said that clarity is power. Well, the clearer you are about what drives, excites and motivates you, the more powerful you become.
