Accepting the Ego

What comes to mind when you think of the word, “ego”? There is very likely a judgment that it is bad; something akin to a jailer that we must break free from. In the past I’ve identified my ego as the enemy, the biggest thing standing in the way of my happiness.

We can listen to any number of experts who will support the same idea. They’ll tell us that we must be freed from the clutches of the ego, giving step by step instructions on how to do it. And there’s usually a message that then, you’ll be able to live the life of your dreams. But is anything really that black or white?

Part of our personal growth is to stand back and question our own ideas and beliefs as well as those of other people. Sometimes we have to wrestle with concepts and teachings, coming to our own understanding so that we can live our own truth.

And part of our spiritual evolution is to notice all the ways in which we create a sense of separation, internally and/or externally, and bring ourselves back into the truth of Unity. How can we live in Oneness and Unity if we are in a constant battle with any aspect of ourselves?

So, what if there’s more to our ego than this idea of being “the bad guy that gets us into trouble”? By delving a little deeper, perhaps we can see the ego in a new light, find acceptance and empower ourselves to live life fully.
